In March, IPOsgoode held a timely conference on the role of students in the university innovation process. IPOsgoode is directed by its Founder, Dr. Giuseppina D’Agostino, at Osgoode Law School, York Univ., in Toronto. It has become one of the leading IP programs in North America.
I moderated and spoke on various panels.

Thanks to Chief Judge Rader (or “Mick” as we call him) for hosting a fantastic Inauguration Parade viewing party at his chambers! We had a view right down to the President’s viewing stand on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.
Denovo, my rock band with CJ Rader, performed at Dervish in NYC last week as part of the NY State Bar Association IP Section’s annual meeting. Although CJ Rader is our most famous member among IP circles he has ordered me to make it clear that I actually run the band! Which is true, but we’re only making a point of it to hopefully dispel the practice of everyone calling it “Chief Judge Rader’s band” . . .
The other members of Denovo are: Jon Knight (keys, guitar, vox, and CJ Rader clerk); Joe Newman (sax, vox, and GW Law student); Mike King (drums and attorney); and Darrell Stark (bass and attorney at Ropes & Gray).

I had an awesome trip to Beijing in October to speak at an IP conference at Peking University with Fed Cir Chief Judge Rader, ITC Administrative Law Judge Essex, Magistrate Judge Grewal (Northern District of CA), and UW Law Dean Testy. We also made some comments at a session with the attorneys from China’s largest law firm, Dacheng Law Offices. And best of all, CJ Rader and I performed a few sets of our rock songs with a stellar back up band of students from the Central Conservatory of Music at a conference reception. Had a lot of fun, but definitely missed our normal Denovo lineup!

Finally getting a chance to post some pictures.
In my last post I speculated idly that perhaps the re-election of President Obama was what emboldened Director Kappos to present a surprisingly pointed and strong defense of software patents at the Center for American Progress. But in a further reminder of why I don’t get involved in politics much, it turns out that Kappos was getting ready to step down from his post:

Speculating wildly again, it might be that Kappos decided to be more forceful in his position on software patents because he knew he was stepping down.
At any rate, I had the good fortune to meet with him on two occasions recently and I am sad to see him leave the PTO. I think the agency was much improved due to his direction there.
